Our Lady of Lourdes Church provides a unique ministry experience with our Youth Handbell Choir and our Advanced Handbell Choir. Youth Bells is open to children grade 5 and up. Some music reading ability is helpful, but not required to begin. As ringers grow over the years and develop their skills, they may audition for Advanced Bells, which plays more challenging material. Listen to an audio sample on the bottom of the page.
Choir members have fun in rehearsal, build lasting friendships, learn personal responsibility, teamwork, musicianship and understanding of the liturgy. Handbell choirs add to the beauty of our liturgies by lending their sound to hymns, psalms and acclamations, and by providing handbell anthems for our prayerful listening.
How does a handbell choir work? Each bell is tuned to a single pitch, and arranged like the keys of a piano. Each ringer is assigned two bells, one for each hand, and rings one when that note appears in the music. As their skills develop, ringers are assigned additional bells: nearby sharps and flats, or octaves to be rung together.
Youth Bells rehearses Wednesdays 4:30-5:30; Advanced Bells rehearses Wednesdays 5:30-6:30, in the church.
